Course Description
Economics 381 introduces basic concepts of statistics and econometrics.
The course will study ways to describe data sets, methods to test hypotheses about the data sets, and ways to explain the relationships between
different data sets . The emphasis throughout will be on application of
the material to practical situations that arise in business and economics.
Textbooks
There is only one required textbook.
It is:
Statistics for Business and Economics (Dellen Publishing Company,
1982), Second Edition, by James T. Mc Clave and P. George Benson.
Grading and General Policies
There will be 4 midterm examinations. However, the lowest grade from
these 4 exams will NOT count in the determination of your grade . Only
your top 3 exams will count, and each will count
15% of your final
grade.
The fina l examination will be comprehensive and will count 40% of your
final grade. The date for the final exam is Friday, December 16 from
.7:30 P.M. to 10:30 P.M.
The remaining 15% of
the details of which
will be due in class
penalized one letter
your grade will be based upon a computer pr'o ject,
will be announced in class. The completed project
on Wednesday, December 7. Late 1?rojects will be
grade for each day late.
There wil l be NO make-up exams. If you miss a midterm exam for whatever
reason, that exam will be dropped as the lowest of your tour midterms.
There will also be no extra-credit assignments.

Problems will be assigned each week . I epcourage you to work with other
students on t-he problems. However, these problems will NOT be collected
and graded. Instead, there will be two recitation sessions each week to
review the problems . Attendance in encouraged but not required. Details
will be announced in class.
I am required to observe official deadlines for adds, drops, withdrawals,
and so on. Please remember these dates.
Tentative Lecture and Test Schedule
Remember that there is no class on Monday, September 5 (Labor Day) and on
Thursday and Friday, November 24 and 25 (Thanksgiving Holidays).
