Plate Boundaries Map Activity In the 1960s, scientists developed a new theory that combined continental drift and seafloor spreading. According to the theory of Plate Tectonics, Earth’s crust and part of the upper mantel are broken into sections. These sections, called plates, move on a plastic-like layer of the mantle. The plates can be though of as rafts that float and move on this layer. The World is split into 14 major plates. Outline, Color and Label the plates on the world map on the following page. Listed below are the names of the plates that are to be used. Also, using arrows show the direction of movement for each plate. Use the picture on page 480 in your book as a reference to label and color your map. Make sure that your map has: 1. Your name on it 2. All of the plates clearly labeled 3. Each plate has arrows showing its direction of movement. 4. The map is colored nicely Names of Plates to use on map: North American Plate South American Plate Eurasian Plate Arabian Plate Indo-Australian Plate Philippine Plate Juan de Fuca Plate Caribbean Plate African Plate Cocos Plate Nazca Plate Pacific Plate Antarctic Plate Scotia Plate Plate Boundaries Map Activity In the 1960s, scientists developed a new theory that combined continental drift and seafloor spreading.
