ES – Activity #20 Rock Candy QUESTION: How are rocks and minerals different? MATERIALS: candy (assorted samples) PROCEDURE: 1. Lay out your samples of candy and determine which are models of a mineral and which are models of rocks. Use the information below to help you decide: ROCKS are made of one or more minerals. This means that the material that makes up an individual rock or several samples of the same kind of rock may vary in color and texture. Rocks are heterogenous - they are mixtures of minerals. MINERALS all have the same chemical make-up, wherever they are found. Different samples of the same mineral generally look the same and have the same properties. Minerals look the same throughout, inside and out. Minerals are homogenous - they are made up of one kind of material. 2. Complete the data for each sample: DATA: See other sheet. QUESTIONS: 1. Which of your samples are “minerals” and which are “rocks”? 2. Name a type of cookie that is a model of a “mineral.” 3. Name a type of cookie that is a model of a “rock.” 4. What are some other common items that can serve as a model of a rock and of a mineral? NAD 5-8 Science/Health Essential Update 2008 Copyright © Daniel J. Wyrick, 2008.
