Simulating Mendeleev
Dmitri Mendeleev (1869) prepared a card similar to the one displayed to the right for
each of the known elements. On the card, he listed the symbol, the atomic mass, and the
chemical properties. By placing the information on separate cards, Mendeleev was able
to move them into any order he desired to look for patterns. The Dalton model of the
atom, developed in 1803, distinguished between atoms of different elements based on
mass. Mendeleev chose to arrange his cards in order of increasing mass.
Directions: You will be given a deck of 14 index cards, each listing the symbol, mass,
and chemical properties of a different element. Arrange the cards in order of
increasing mass and look for a pattern that groups elements with similar chemical
properties. Draw your arrangement in the space below.
