OUR DYNAMIC EARTH:
Name___________________
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
 Describe the layers of earth’s interior
 Distinguish between the layers of earth’s upper mantle
 Identify the main tectonic plates of earth’s crust
 Describe the types of motion that occur at 3 main types of tectonic boundaries
 Describe the geologic events that occur at 3 main types of tectonic boundaries
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Go to this website: http://www.learner.org/interactives/dynamicearth/ and then to the
Intro chapter; click on “start your exploration with Earth’s Structure”.
2. Go to the Plate Tectonics Chapter. Click through each page, including any interactive
pages, or pages with questions for you to answer.
3. Go to the Plate Boundaries chapter, and again, take advantage of any interactive
pages or ‘Challenges’. In particular, at the bottom of the page is the Plates and
Boundaries Challenge; take this as many times as you need to get them all correct in
the 2 minutes allotted time.
4. Go to the “Slip, Slide, and Collide” chapter. Click on “See what happens at different
plate boundaries” to bring up each of the major boundaries. While you are studying
each of the boundaries, be sure to follow the directions for more information, such as
‘roll the mouse over each name for more information”. The first boundary is
‘converging’, the second is ‘diverging’, and the third is ‘transform. At the end of this
page, you will find a Plate Interactions Challenge. Be sure to take this challenge, with its
real-world examples!
5. Go to the page called “Test Skills”. Type your LAST NAME only in the space provided
(NOT your first name or any initial!). Answer all 30 questions. When you have your
score, copy the 3 lines of text at the top of the quiz results, and paste in the space
below. DO NOT copy the entire test; just copy/paste the score!
But when you do, please highlight the text and shrink it so that it will look like my
example below (oopsies, did I get 0/30???):
