Population structure
• Total population: 33.76 million
• Rural Population: 13,41 million (39.7%)
• Widespread poverty: among every 10 poor Men, 7
are living in rural area;
Moroccan Agriculture
• Total area of Morocco ~ 71 million ha:
• 13 % (9.2 million ha) of arable land (17% irrigated & 83%
rainfed);
•
•
•
•
44 % (31 million ha) of non productive land;
30 % (21 million ha) of pasture;
8 % (5.8 million ha) of forest;
5 % (3 million ha) of native alfalfa.
Economic role of agriculture
• On average, agriculture contributed to 18% total GDP
in the period extending from 1980 to 2010 (at
prevailing prices), reaching a maximum of 23.3% in
1991 and a minimum of 13.3% in 2000.
• It employs just over 30% of the working population
• The sector also provides indirect support for 60% of
the population and generates almost 25% of export
revenue

Importance of cereals in Morocco
• Cereals play an important nutritional, social and
economic role;
• The total demand for cereal products was about 2.8
million tons in 1960 and now it is estimated at 10
million tons. Annual consumption of cereals is
currently around 320 kg per capita.
• Cereals account for 25% of food expenditures;
• Grain and straw represent 40% of total forage units
requirements.
Importance of cereal crops
• Total area of cereals is estimated between 5 and 5.5
million hectares.
• Average annual production is about 6 million tones
and in average it covers only 40% of the demand of
cereals in Morocco.
Economic role of cereals
• Represents 40% of work opportunities in crop
production sector
• 30% of the agricultural GDP
• 45% of total food imports
• Influence overall economic activity of the country
Green Morocco Plan
A strategy to achieve sustainable growth in agriculture
and food security
Problematic
• Post harvest losses for cereals, fruits and vegetables
in Morocco are very high and rough estimates are
evaluated between 20 and 40%.
• Studies on the estimates of post harvest losses and
food waste in Morocco are insufficient, fragmented
and imprecise.
Objectives of the study
• Identify post harvest losses for mean agricultural
product
• Better understand the causes of these losses
• Propose a guidelines for an action program for the
reduction of these losses
