Roger A. Freedman, and contributing author A. Lewis Ford
General Course Description
This course will introduce the student to electricity and magnetism. It will also
cover basic DC and AC circuits. The course will cover material from chapters 2131 of the text. The lecture will closely follow the text, and students should read
the material relevant to each week’s lectures to aid in understanding the material.
Prerequisites
Students should have taken Calculus I and Calculus II (Mathematics 141-142 or
the equivalent).

Lecture notes will be posted online under the Department of Physics and
Astronomy website (http://www.phys.utk.edu/courses/courses_fall2007.html).
Any additional information will also be posted online.

All work submitted by a student is expected to represent
their own work. Students are expected to enter their own
homework on the CAPA system. Students are expected to
perform all work in conformance with the University policies

Homework
Homework will not be accepted late. Homework will be assigned
using the online CAPA software system. Each problem set will be
available at noon on Monday, and will be due by 8 AM the following
Monday. Any exceptions will be noted in class. The first problem set
will be assigned on Mon. August 27. Speaking of exceptions, the first
problem set will be due on Wed. Sept 5 since there is no class on
Labor Day.
Hourly Tests
There will be three hourly tests and a final exam. In general, there
will be no make-up hourly tests. If you have an emergency situation,
please contact me prior to the test.
Laboratory
Laboratory make-ups are at the discretion of the laboratory instructor,
and arrangements must be made with laboratory instructor. Although
the laboratory instructors will vary from section to section, every effort
will be made to ensure a uniform grading policy between sections.
