Ambient Networks
 A project for mobile and wireless systems beyond 3G
 Designs an affordable and scalable mobile
communication network, that opens up new ways to
communicate, for billions of people and devices
 Aims at the definition of a ubiquitous Control Space
(Ambient Control Space, ACS) applicable for various
types of networks
 Promotes network intelligence and the optimal use of
network resources. Provides ways to overcome
technology differences and operator boundaries

Ambient Media Delivery Principles
 The network complexity is hidden from the users and
applications with abstractions
 The network provides the routing, content adaptation
and caching which meet the user needs
 The routing is adapted according to the changes in the
network
 The complexity increases only in the transcoders
(media ports) and not in the end devices

How to realize these concepts?
?
The Ambient Networks project provides concepts without
relations to the current network architecture

Concept Principles
 The research in this thesis concentrated only on the
Control Part of the solution





All signaling is based on SIP
Sender uploads the media to a server
Uploaded content is identified with a Media Stream URI
The possible receivers are notified about the content
The receivers may initiate a download sequence with
the Media Stream URI

Feasibility Study
 The possible components for an IMS testbed were
searched
 A combination of Fokus Open Source IMS Core and
Ericsson Service Development Studio was used
 Unfortunately no suitable MRF emulation was found
 A MRF emulation will be developed and added in the
future
 The control part of the model and its feasibility was
studied

Conclusions
 For the implemented parts of the Ambient Networks
Media Delivery Concept, IMS as an implementation
base works
 The research has to be continued to be sure of the
whole concept
 The platform for the client and server solutions was not
found as flexible as needed
– Difficulties not related to IMS standards but internal
functions of the platform
 The case MRF
– No flexible emulations available
– The concept of MRF (control, capabilities) still evolves in
3GPP

Future Work




Step 1: Add the user plane
Step 2: Add the MRF
Step 3: Include more IMS domains
Step 4: Include other access types
 This thesis was the first step of a bigger project
