Civil Wars in Rome
Reform Failed
• Reformers are people who try to change

They wanted to solve the problems between
the rich and the poor.
Wealthy landowners in the Senate had
reformers killed
Soldiers were hired and turned to the sides of
their generals instead of the Republic.
Civil War
• A war between one group of people in
their own nation.
• Generals on the side of the plebeians v.
the generals supported by the
patricians/Senators.
• Patricians won and Julius Caesar took over
as dictator of Rome.
• Republic government is dead.
Caesar
• Was named dictator for life.
• He was assassinated when people feared
Caesar wanted to be king.
• Another civil war broke out because no
one could decide on who would be the
next leader.
• Augustus became the dictator and
allowed some of the Republic rules to
come back.
Civil Service
• Civil service is duties one does for the
government.
• Paying taxes, etc.
• Augustus had the Pax Romana signed.
Peace lasted for 200 years.
• Roman army built roads, bridges,
tunnels, and aqueducts.
