The Sociological Perspectives
(See Sheet)
• Structural Functionalist: Society works, when it does
not – society will fix itself
• Conflict: People with power will fight to keep it, people
without power will fight to get it
• Symbolic Interactionalist: What we are is obvious by
our presentation
• Feminist: Women, sex, gender and the power
imbalances caused by being female, sex, and gender
• Post Modern: How do we get and process information,
our lives are not able to be explained easily by another
person (hermeneutic)
Think this over for a second…
• Structural Functionalist? What do they want in society?
What would they say?
• Conflict? What do they want in society? What would
they say?
• Post Modern? What do they want in society? What
would they say?
• Feminist? What do they want in society? What would
they say?
• Symbolic Interactionalist? What do they want in
society? What would they say?
The Bow - Tie
• Need a different shape to think about issues as
we learn more about how sociologists think
about issues.
• The Bow Tie!
• On one side are the social sciences, in the
middle is a social issue or problem, on the left
are the sociological perspectives
