• After the last emperor of West Jin was killed, his
offspring established a second Jin Dynasty, which
is called 东晋 in history, in the south of China.
The land of 东晋 is much smaller than 西晋, since
a large part of land was taken by many other small
countries.
• Minorities in the north took a lot of Han people’s
land, and gradually, they became more and more
“Hanized”.
谢安 (xie4 an1)
• East Jin was threatened by Qian Qin to the north of it. Once Qian Qin
attacked East Jin, and the emperor and all the officials were very
nervous because they knew this battle could decide East Jin’s fate. The
premier, 谢安, was famous for being calm. He arranged everything
carefully for the war but didn’t want others to know he was anxious.
One day he got a letter while he was playing Chinese Go with another
official. He looked at it, put it down and continue playing. The other
official asked: “What is that?” He said as if nothing important
happened: “Nothing, just the kids finally defeated the enemies.”
Knowing they were now safe, the official ran out to spread the great
news, and 谢安, who was actually very excited inside, also ran to his
home, and didn’t even notice it when his wood shoes got broken when
he was running too fast. After this war, East Jin’s governing became
steady and this dynasty lasted for more than 100 years.
