“A dark cloud gathered over her last Christmas time when South Carolina
seceded from the Union.” (pg. 29, par.2)
This shows that the time period of the book is the Civil War era (1861-1865)
because the war was between the North and the South. It also states correct
information; South Carolina seceded from the Union on December 10th,
1860 (near Christmas time). It was considered ‘the first to act’ during the
Civil War.

(pg. 29, par. 2)
This shows the time period because during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln
was President of the U.S.
Abraham Lincoln was president from 1861-1865 (during the Civil War).

“He’d joined the thirty-first Illinois Infantry Regiment organized after the
awful defeat in Bull Run.” (pg. 96, par. 2)
This shows the time period because this Regiment was founded during the
Civil War.
The author is accurate because the Regiment was organized two months
after the defeat in Bull Run. It was created on September 18th, 1861. The
battle of Bull Run took place on July 21st, 1861 (about two months earlier).

“Abe Lincoln strode onto the stage. The audience gasped. But it wasn’t the
real Abe Lincoln. It was a tall galoot with side whiskers like his. In the play,
he wasn’t exactly the president of the United States.” (pg. 87, par. 2)
This event shows the time period because it says “ But it wasn’t the real Abe
Lincoln,” so he must have been alive during this time period. Also, Abe was a
tall man with a beard as stated above.
“Long trains of army wagons drawn by mules clogged the streets and
slowed our way.” (pg. 109, par. 2)
This shows the time period because during the Civil War, army wagons were
used to transport the sick and wounded. Also, they used to line the street of
major military cities (example- Cairo, Illinois). The author was accurate
because at army camps, army wagons filled with wounded and sick soldiers
lined the streets.

“The widow provided us with wicks, but charged
extra for the lamp oil.” (pg. 109, par. 1)
This shows the time period because present day,
people do not use lamp oil to light lamps. We
currently use light bulbs. This also shows that lamp
oil was expensive back then. Usually only the
wealthy used oil lamps.
“ “ Do people own slaves?” “ It happens.” ”
(pg. 130, par. 10)
This shows the time period because one of the
major causes of the Civil War was slavery.
The Union was very much against slavery.
However, the Confederacy allowed slavery to
happen.
“They brought back 300 wounded soldiers from the
Battle of Belmont.”
(pg. 136, par.1)
This shows the time period because the Battle of
Belmont was a major battle in the Civil War.
The battle was in the opening stages of the Civil War.
This battle is a devastating loss for the Union. They
had about 300 wounded, 138 killed and 104
captured/missing.

“We southerners are doomed the day the Yankees
take New Orleans.”
(pg. 140, par. 1)
This shows the time period because the ‘Yankees’ was
a nickname for the Union in the Civil War. Also, New
Orleans was a major city in the Confederacy.
When the Union seized New Orleans on April 19th,
1862, it became the highway to southern Mississippi
for the Union.

“How empty Grand Tower seemed
after the boom of Cairo.” (pg. 143,
par. 2)
This shows the time period because
Cairo and Grand Tower were dome
cities in the Civil War. Cairo was a
major army camp during the war.
Grand Tower was the setting in the
novel but is a smaller city named after
a geographical rock in the Mississippi
River.
