Fugitive Slave Act – did not allow
anyone that had escaped a trial and
placed a fine of 1,000 dollars on anyone
who helped. Slave were caught and
returned to their original owner

freedom on the basis that he was living in a
free state
Supreme Court stated that the
5th Amendment protected
property – thus saying that
slaves were not citizens or even
people and there for they were

conditions, filthy surroundings,
limited diet and inadequate

– In battle conditions soldiers lived
in rubbish, food scraps, and pits
containing human excrement 
