NCEA Level 1 – 90162 Process
information to describe a use of
biology knowledge with direction

Examples of student work
1
Excellence
2
Excellence
This report is based on the technological application (EN 3) of amniocentesis.
Evidence for Excellence is provided in the following ways: In Part One the
student explains why the technique is ideally carried out at 14 - 17 weeks
gestation and describes how the technique is carried out. In Part Two the student
elaborates by providing multiple reasons as to when and why the technological
application of amniocentesis is used. For example the student explains why
amniocentesis is advised for older mothers, if there is a history of birth defects, if
the mother has HIV or if a the serum screen test is abnormal. This constitutes the
beginnings of a discussion because of the elaboration involved and the multiple
links made. In Part Three the student has provided further evidence of discussion
by integrating relevant biology knowledge with its use. For example, the student
has discussed how knowledge of chromosomal abnormalities, as detected by
amniocentesis, can be used in making a decision about the future of the foetus Refer to EN 6, bullet point 3. The bibliography provides evidence that the student
has selected information for processing from a range of sources (EN 4).

Excellence (low)
This report just meets the requirements for a low Excellence. The
section of the report on "How does the technology work"
provides examples of explanation and the beginning of discussion
when the student compares the long term effect of radiation on
cancer cells and normal cells. Overall the report provides
evidence of description, a good level of explanation and just
sufficient evidence of discussion to place it at the lower end of E.

Merit
14
Merit (high)
This report is a high Merit. It shows sufficient evidence of the
processing of information (EN 5). The relevant science and biology
knowledge related the use of hearing devices in the context of the
working of the ear is summarised (EN 3), but this is mainly descriptive.
It is written mostly in the student's own words and describes aspects of:
•a malfunction of the ear (hearing loss) and the technologies used to
treat this
•how people use a range of science/biology knowledge to improve the
hearing of patients.
The student does explain how biology knowledge is used in devising
both a hearing aid and cochlear implant (EN 6, bullet point 2); at least
two clear reasons for how the biology knowledge applies to the use are
given. There is limited evidence, however, of a discussion (EN 6, bullet
point 3) to achieve at Excellence. The student needed to show more
evidence of analysis skills by linking relevant science or biology ideas
to the use of the technologies, for example by elaborating on and
justifying the use of cochlear implants, or comparing or contrasting the
use of implants for severe hearing loss over hearing aids for slight
deafness.

Merit (low)
The report is a low Merit. In Part One the student has described
the technological application (EN 3) of the amniocentesis
procedure. Part Two provides evidence of weak explanation of the
timing of amniocentesis. In Part Three the student provides further
evidence of explanation of how the information gained from the
technological application of an amniocentesis can be used to make
a decision about the futures of the foetus. While the explanation is
weak because the reasons provided are not expanded on, the
student gives at least two clear reasons for how the biology
knowledge applies to its use in this application.

Achieved
24
Achieved (high)
The report is a high Achieved. It provides evidence of description of
relevant biology knowledge and its related use. In Part One the student
describes the process of the technological application (EN explanatory note 3) of amniocentesis. Part Two provides evidence of
the beginnings of some weak explanation of why the process may be
advisable and this puts the report at the upper end of Achieved.
However the ideas are not sufficiently developed to achieve at Merit.
Part Three provides further evidence of description of the benefits of
this application, but once again, these are single ideas which are not
developed further by providing sufficient reasons.

Achieved (low)
This report just meets the requirements for a low Achieved. It
consists mainly of isolated descriptions on aspects of how the
kidney works and the kidney disease nephritis. It is weak on how
people use a range of science/biology knowledge to improve the
health of patients in relation to the kidney and dialysis. Because
of the weak nature of this description the report is at the lower
end of Achieved.

Not Achieved
This report is almost an Achieved. It is weak on evidence of
processing of the biology knowledge in relation to the process of
normal fertilisation, but has some description of how this knowledge
is used in IVF to treat infertility. Insufficient description overall
places the report at high Not Achieved.
