A Process has an Outcome




Health and disease are outcomes of a
process
Disease is a process with an outcome
Treatment procedures are processes with
an outcome
Every process has two or more possible
outcomes, which are categorized as
desirable or undesirable

Risk


Risk is generally associated with
undesirable outcomes like disease, an
abscess, and tooth loss, but applies to
desirable outcomes as well
Risk is the likelihood of a specific
outcome, expressed as a probability

Risk Factors
An environmental, behavioral, or biologic factor
confirmed by temporal sequence, usually in
longitudinal studies, which if present directly
increase the probability of a disease occurring, and
if absent or removed reduces the probability. Risk
factors are part of the causal chain, or expose the
host to the causal chain. Once disease occurs,
removal of a risk factor may not result in a cure.
