Title
Energy and Work
Date
04/23
 Please take the notes from the cart, fold it as
a booklet, and place it on pg of your ISN.
What is energy?
 Work is done when a force moves an
object a certain distance.
 Energy is the ability to do work/cause
change.
Types of Energy
Kinetic Energy
 Kinetic energy is energy
due to motion.
 Kinetic energy depends
upon the speed and mass
of the object.
Potential Energy
 Potential energy is stored
energy due to the
interactions between objects
or particles.
 The types of potential energy
you are responsible for
knowing: gravitational,
elastic, and chemical.
Kinetic Energy
Kinetic Energy
Potential Energy
 Gravitational
potential energy
depends upon the
object’s weight and
height.
Potential Energy
 Elastic potential
energy is stored in
objects that are
compressed or
stretched.
Potential Energy
 Chemical potential energy
is energy stored in the
chemical bonds between
atoms.
 It is released when
chemical reactions occur.
For the curious
150 kJ
(35kcal)
 You may recognize Calories (kcal). Once it was the metric unit for
heat energy.
 Calories (with capital C) = kcal (1000 calories with a lower case c)
 It’s weird, I know.
 Now Joules (J) is the metric unit for energy (of all types).
Potential Energy
Forms of Energy
 Using pg 160-167 of the textbook, fill in your Describing Wheel with the
different types of energy.
 Include the definitions of each type and at least one example for each.
