Energy
Chapter 4 sect 1
What is Energy?
 Energy
is anything that has the
ability to cause change
– Anything that changes must have
energy
– Energy causes changes
 Kingdome
Different Forms of Energy
 Electrical-Anything
powered by
electricity
 Chemical-Stored in chemical bonds
– Examples-Food, anything flammable
 Thermal-Sunlight
– Includes light and heat energy
 Sound-You
stereo
can feel the bass from a
Kinetic Energy

Energy in the form of motion
– Anything that is moving has KE

Kinetic energy depends on the
mass and velocity of an object
– More mass=More KE
– More velocity=More KE
Calculating Kinetic Energy
 To
calculate KE use the following
formula
– KE=½mass x velocity2
– Do not forget your units
 Mass=Kg
 Velocity=m/s
 Acceleration=m/s2
 Kinetic
Energy=Joules
Potential Energy
 Energy
that is stored within an object
– Energy can be stored because of the
objects position
– Energy can be stored because of the
physical or chemical make up of the
object
 There
are 3 types of potential Energy
Types of potential energy
1. Elastic potential energy
 Energy that is stored by something
that can return to its original shape

Example-Rubber band, racquet ball
Types of Potential Energy
2. Chemical potential energy
 Energy stored with in the chemical
bonds of an atom



Energy is released when bonds are broken
Glucose in human body is broken down to
provide us with energy
Items that are flammable allow chemical
bonds to be broken easily
 Large amounts of chemical bonds breaking
Types of Potential Energy
3. Gravitational potential energy Energy that is stored by objects above
the earths surface

Example
Calculating GPE
Gravitational potential energy
depends on two things
1. The mass of the object
2. How high the object is off the
ground (its height)
 To find GPE use following formula
GPE(j)=mass(Kg)x9.8m/s2 x height (m)
