“Standard anatomical terms of location
are designations employed in science that
deal with the anatomy of animals to avoid
ambiguities that might otherwise arise.”
Anterior Vs. Posterior
Anterior – towards the head end
Posterior – towards the end
opposite the head
Dorsal Vs. Ventral
Dorsal – towards the spinal cord
(back – think dorsal fin)
Ventral – towards the belly
Lateral Vs. Medial
Lateral – towards left/right
sides of the body
Medial – towards the middle of
the body.
Superior Vs. Inferior
Inferior – Below (as in the legs
are inferior to the abdomen)
Superior – Above (as in the heart
is superior to the intestines)
