Problem:
• Several thousand rules (marine doctrines)
determine the tasks the staff of a military ship
has to perform. The rules apply to people
from the chief officer to the sea man.
•The rules exist somehow and somewhere.
• How do we structure the rules in order to
have the right information available at the
right time?
• How do we visualise/present the results of
an inference?
• How do we visualise the interrelation
between rules, in order to inform the user,
why a specific action has to be performed?
• How do we present the relevant information
to the user?
• Looks like a technical problem but we have
to think about visualisation, since people
have to be confident with the proposed
actions, i.e. they have to understand, why
something should be done.

visualising the rules and inference results
• artificial intelligence
– knowledge representation and inferencing
• visualisation of rules, actions, missions,
relations between rules
• ? 90 % of the missions/tasks based on the
rules are planned beforehand (=> time table)
• emergency situations require unplanned,
unforeseen actions in a minimum amount of
time
