Unit 2: Trigonometry
Problems
For each of the following problems, draw a well labeled diagram. Include a sentence at the end stating
your answer.
1. A tightly stretched kite string makes an angle of 71o with the ground. If the length of the string is
150 m, how high above the ground is the kite? Give our answer to the nearest metre.
2. A wheel chair ramp needs to be built to the front door of a house. If the threshold (bottom of the
door opening) is 65 cm above ground level and if the angle of elevation of the ramp must be 10o, how
far from the house must the bottom of the ramp be located? Give your answer to the nearest
centimeter. Assume that the side of the house and the ground are perpendicular. (See diagram on back)
3. The angle of depression of a ski slope is 14o. How far directly down the slope of a hill must you ski
in order to reduce your altitude by 300m? Give your answer to the nearest meter. (See diagram on back)
4. A ladder of length 6 m leans against a vertical wall. If the base of the ladder rests on level ground
and is 1.7 m from the wall, what angle does the ladder make with the wall? Give your answer to the
nearest tenth of a degree.
5. What is the angle of elevation of the sun if a 13.2 m vertical pole casts a shadow 51.6 m long on
level ground? Give your answer to the nearest tenth of a degree. (See diagram on back)
6. An observer standing on level ground determines that the angle of elevation of the top of the Eiffel
tower is 29o. If the tower is 285 m high, how far is the observer from the point on the ground directly
below the center of the tower? Give your answer to one decimal place.
7. If the straight line distance to Regina from Saskatoon is 240 km, and if the direction of Regina from
Saskatoon is S26oE, then how far south of Saskatoon is Regina? Give your answer to one decimal
place.
