Climate
Change
and
Hunger
The Facts
What does climate change look like?
• Higher temperatures
• More droughts
• Changes in rainfall
patterns
• Rising sea levels
At least 70 percent of people who
regularly go to bed hungry live in
rural areas in developing countries
Most of these people
are farmers
What has Canada done to
help vulnerable people in
developing countries?
• Signed onto an international agreement
• A generous funding contribution 2010-2012
• Mostly for mitigation
What does
Canada still
need to do?
Make a new
funding
commitment, with
more support for
adaptation
Influencing Policies
Why?
•Called as Christians
•Privileged as Canadians
•It works!
Two Big Success Stories
1. Aid for
Agriculture
2. Untying
Food Aid
Aid for Agriculture
Untying
Food Aid
The Big Difference
Delivery Time:
From Canada
11-19 weeks
Local Purchase
4-6 weeks
Cost: at least $63 per ton cheaper
In 2008 the Canadian government untied all food aid, thus
reducing delivery times and purchase and transportation
costs.
Last year – Foodgrains Bank saved more than $2 million
through untied food aid.
Climate Change:
What can YOU
do?

Encouraging Canada to:
• Make a new financial commitment to
help developing countries address
climate change
• Allocate more of this money to
adaptation activities
Email your MP
