Microbiology 20 Disease Assignment – Spring 2016
(due May 17th)
For this assignment you and a partner will investigate an infectious disease or immune disorder
of your choice. You must inform me of your choice to ensure that A) it is truly an infectious disease
or immune disorder and B) the disease has not already be chosen (each pair must investigate a
different disease). It is NOT OK to present a disease you have done for another course such as
Anatomy or Physiology. Unapproved diseases will not be considered.
You and your partner will do the following with regard to your approved disease topic:



together do a 8-10 minute oral presentation on May 17 or 19 during lecture (30 points)
individually write a 1000 word paper (30 points)
one will individually create a 6-panel brochure and the other will individually create a
poster (22” x 28” minimum) (20 points)
You should address the following in each part of the assignment, using your own words:
1) Description of the Pathogen
-the structure and physiology of the disease-causing agent (if applicable)
2) The Mode of Transmission
-how the pathogen is transmitted from one host to another (if applicable)
3) The Mechanism of Disease
-how the pathogen or immune disorder causes damage/illness
4) Signs and Symptoms
-visible signs characteristic of the disease and symptoms experienced by those afflicted
5) Diagnosis, Treatment, Prognosis
-how the disease and any associated pathogen are identified, treatments used to
eliminate or ameliorate the disease, and the range of outcomes for the disease
6) Epidemiology
-prevalence, geographic distribution, mortality rate of the disease
7) Prevention and Vaccination
-methods by which disease occurrence and transmission (if applicable) is minimized
How you organize and present this assignment is up to you and your partner. Be creative and
include illustrations. Use Powerpoint for your oral presentations and be sure to get feedback
from me ahead of time. You should have at least three sources for your information and provide
complete references (APA) for each. At least one of your sources should NOT be a website (i.e.,
a book or journal). Each part of this assignment will be scored as follows:



accuracy and completeness of the information presented (60%)
overall presentation/organization of the assignment (20%)
clarity and quality of writing, oral presentation (20%)
