Aerobic Decomposition – is decomposition in the
presence of oxygen (i.e. microorganisms that need
oxygen (aerobes) will decompose complex
organic molecules. (odor is not a problem)
Non-Aerobic Decomposition – is decomposition
with the lack of oxygen (i.e. microorganisms that
don’t need oxygen (anaerobes) will decompose
complex organic molecules producing methane,
ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile organic
acids. (odor is a problem- putrefaction)
