Bundling and Unbundling
• Bundling: Putting smaller units together to
make a larger one, e.g. putting 10 tens
together to make a hundred
• Regrouping: Renaming, (instead of “carrying”
or “borrowing,”) e.g., a group of 10 ones is
“renamed” a ten when the ones are bundled
and moved from the ones to the tens place

Area Model
• An array or area model is an arrangement of a set
of objects organized into equal groups in rows
and columns.
• Arrays or area models help make counting easy in
the lower grades. Counting by equal groups is
more efficient than counting objects one by one.
• Later, children use arrays and area models to
learn about multiplication and area.
