The Rational
Numbers on a
Number Line
Honors Math – Grade 7
Rational numbers can be graphed on a number line. Each rational
number represents one point on the number line.
Negative integers
are less than 0.
Positive integers
are greater than 0.
Zero is neither
positive nor negative.
OPPOSITES
To graph a rational number on a number line, draw a dot to
locate the point on the number line that corresponds to the
integer.
Two rational numbers are additive inverses (opposites) if
they are the same distance from zero on the number line,
but on opposite sides of zero.

The sum of a rational number and its opposite is 0.

VOCABULARY ALERT
The Absolute Value of an integer is its distance from zero
on a number line.
