2-7 Square Roots and
Real Numbers
Objectives:
The student will be able to:
1. find square roots
2. classify and order real numbers
A square root is one of two equal
factors of a number.
If x2 = y then x is a square root of y.
In the expression 64 ,
is the radical sign and
64 is the radicand.
What numbers are perfect squares?
1•1=1
2•2=4
3•3=9
4 • 4 = 16
5 • 5 = 25
6 • 6 = 36
49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, …

Rational numbers can be written
as terminating or repeating
decimals, or fractions.
Irrational numbers cannot be written
as terminating or repeating decimals,
or fractions.
Examples: 3
24
Note: 3 and 24 are not perfect squares
The set of real numbers consists of
the set of rational numbers and the
set of irrational numbers.

You can write a set of real numbers
in order from greatest to least or
least to greatest. To do so, find a
decimal approximation for each
number in the set.
