ECE 4006B Fall 2002, Ye Olde Groupe 6, John Covey Final Progress Report (11-27 to 12-5) Final Progress: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Successfully performed conectorized Rx testing Performed unconnectorized Rx & Tx testing Destroyed connectorized PD Debugged Rx and Tx boards Found more errors in layout Finished 2nd layout Halted soldering until new boards arrived He was a good PD, and those who knew him, loved him Received 2nd batch of PCBs Assembled and tested new Rx & Tx boards (Especially Nilay) Calculated correct Pot values Destroyed 2 more PDs Received VCSEL from Group 7 and Maxim 3287 from Group 1 Must have fried Maxim 3287 and probably fried one VCSEL Failed to receive unconnectorized signals Wrote a long report explaining our catastrophes Set our hair on fire one last time The Renaissance Electroptical Board The Resulting Eyes for Connectorized PD PRBS7 Why is there jitter? There are 824729358 reasons. I can’t believe this worked at all. K28.5 Old Layout 90 degree input Vcc to pin 10, not 11 New Layout Last Rx board Tried 3 PDs, 3 boards, 3 Maxim 3264s, 3 Maxim 3266s, 6 power connectors, and 5 SMA connectors (not including Electroptical board) Last Tx board Used 50Ω resistor to measure current before using new boards, adjusted to 6mA Used 2 Laser driver chips, 2 VCSELs, 3 Boards, 4 pots, 3 power connectors, and 3 SMA connectors Pot Values: Rbias=800 - 3.3kΩ Rmod=10k – 38k Ω Signal results from last boards …self explanatory Why???? • 1st Maxim 3287 could have died from powering wrong pin • • • • • • • • • • • • 2nd Maxim 3287 is dead, Jim 90 degree angle still in newest Tx layout Modified first boards too much (drilling, soldering traces, using staple, replaced everything) Corrected everything with solder traces Always used at least 750 C when soldering Very rough when replacing parts Filled 66% of all VCSEL/PD pins with solder Power/GND problems could have destroyed parts Scratched one unconnectorized PD Never tested fibers before using Powered VCSELs and PDs with incorrect orientations several times Honeywell/DigiKey/Optek/Advanced Photonix/FiberComm conspiracy to send us duds • Overall, we don’t know. We covered every problem at least once. The Final Gantt Chart
