A 4-WIRE KELVIN RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT
The AMPTEC 630ES measures DC resistance with a 4 Wire Kelvin technique. Two of the wires Current high and
Current Low pass through the resistance under test in a current loop - as part of a failsafe constant current source with
only 5 mA in the current loop. It doesn't matter if the test leads are longer with more in-series resistance or even if there is
some contact resistance with the connection to the resistance under test, because the constant current source's compliance
voltage works to maintain a constant 5 mA (on the 2.0 ohm range) flowing in the loop.
The other 2 wires (Voltage high and Voltage low) sense the voltage drop across the "resistance under test" (i.e. a squib).
No measurement error in the voltage leads - The voltage measurement is high impedance – This means, virtually no
current is drawn in the voltage sense lead wires. With "virtually no current drawn, in the lead wires there is virtually "No
voltage drop or No Voltage Drop error in the voltage sense wires. Conclusion – With 4 Wire Kelvin, long distance test
leads do not create a measurement error as long as you have compliance voltage drive remaining in the constant current
loop. If test resistance is too high for the range, the 630ES display flashes "Overrange" meaning out of compliance voltage.

AMPTEC 630ES FEATURES
1. Calibration/Maintenance access screws
2. Purge Valve - Provides Air Pressure Equalization to open.
If unit will not open (i.e. after transit) due to an air pressure
change, open purge valve to equalize pressure.
3. Handles - see item #1 then lift for calibration access
4. Single Access Multi-purpose Main Connector - for either
measuring test lead hookup or connection to battery charger.
The power switch (item #21) must be in “ Off/Charging
mode” while the battery charger is connected to recharge the
batteries.
5. Milliammeter - measures actual 630ES test current levels.
6. Minus sign - indicates “low battery level” recharge tim e
7. Fuse Access - 2 ampere fast blow type for general
operation, check fuse if unit is non-operational. ( 2AG FAST BLOW)
8. Zero pot - Adjusts shorted resistance offset (i.e test leads).
9. Keylock Switch - Safe mode shorts inputs together, disconnects & isolates user inputs from 630ES measurement
electronics. Measure mode switches user inputs to ohmmeter.
10. Input jack - Plug into the 630ES Ohmmeter meter test
lead
11. Input jack of 0.1 ohm test resistor for checking the lower
end of scale or zero accuracy of the 2 ohm & 20 ohm range.
12. 1 ohm test resistor for checking the mid-scale
functionality of the 2 ohm range.
13. 10 ohm test resistors for checking the mid-scale
functionality of the 20 ohm range of the 630ES.
14. Input jack for the 630ES common test lead (plug-in black
banana jack)- also accesses the “shield” of the Faraday Cage.
15 and 16. 100 ohm, and 100K ohm test resistors for
checking the mid-scale functionality of the 200 ohm and
200 K ohm ranges of the 630ES.
17. 190K ohm test resistor - if shunted in parallel during an
”Open Circuit” test on 200K ohm range, a shift <40 counts
means resistance under test is > 200 Megohms (see manual).
18. O-ring seal(s) in 630ES lid & under the front plate
provide Water Resistant seals, re-seat seal if loose.
19. Tight Squeeze Flip Latch Area - waterproof seal when
closed, press down lid with palm and flip latch to open unit.
20. Resistance Ranges - 2 W , 20W , 200W , and 200KW silicone boot provides water-resistance switch cover ( LED
indicates the selected range).
21. Power On or OFF/Charging Switch
22. Beveled Display Hood and Super Bright LED Display
readable in sunlight.
23. Test Leads wrap around inside rim of 630ES lid, with
Velcrotm style hook and loop fastening.
Conclusion – After verifying the 200 Kohm range of the meter is "OK" the 630ES is ready
to safely measure the resistance of squibs, explosive bolts and a variety of EEDs (electroexplosive devices.
