Complements
What is a Complement?

Word or word group that completes the
meaning of a verb.

Example:
Incomplete- Dr. Charles Drew made. (what?)…..
Complete- Dr. Charles Drew made advances in the
study of blood plasma. (made what?)……..
Direct Object

A noun, pronoun, or word group that tells
who or what is receiving the action.

Example:

My uncle repairs engines and sells them. (Repairs
what? Sells what?)………
Indirect Object



Noun, pronoun, or word group that
sometimes appears in the sentences
containing direct objects.
Answer “to whom? or to what?” or “for
whom? or for what?”
Example:

The waiter gave her the bill. (To whom did the waiter
give the bill?)……
Subject Complement



Word or word group in the predicate that
identifies or describes the subject.
The subject complement is connected to the
subject by a linking verb.
There are two types:

Predicate Nominatives

Word or word group in the predicate that
identifies the subject. (always a noun,
pronoun, or word group that functions as a
noun)

Example:

The year book editors will be Fred and Kristen.
Predicate Adjective

Adjective that is in the predicate and
describes the subject.
Connected to the subject by a linking verb.

Example:


Cold water tastes good on a hot day.
