Complements What is a Complement? Word or word group that completes the meaning of a verb. Example: Incomplete- Dr. Charles Drew made. (what?)….. Complete- Dr. Charles Drew made advances in the study of blood plasma. (made what?)…….. Direct Object A noun, pronoun, or word group that tells who or what is receiving the action. Example: My uncle repairs engines and sells them. (Repairs what? Sells what?)……… Indirect Object Noun, pronoun, or word group that sometimes appears in the sentences containing direct objects. Answer “to whom? or to what?” or “for whom? or for what?” Example: The waiter gave her the bill. (To whom did the waiter give the bill?)…… Subject Complement Word or word group in the predicate that identifies or describes the subject. The subject complement is connected to the subject by a linking verb.
