Comparativo.
To make comparison of equality of adjectives
or adverbs the following construction is
used in Spanish:
Tan + adjective/adverb + como
Pedro es tan guapo como Raúl.
Yo aprendo tan rápido como tú.
• To make comparison of equality with nouns
Spanish uses the following construction:
Tanto + noun + como
Tanto in this case acts as an adjective and it
must agree in gender and number with the
noun or pronoun it modifies.
Tengo tantos amigos como mi hermano.
Tomamos tantas clases como ustedes.
• To make comparison of equality with verbs
use the following construction.
Verb+ tanto como + noun or pronoun
Mi madre habla tanto como mi tía.
Mis hermanos nadan tanto como yo.
• A comparison of inequality expresses
more…than or less… than. Spanish uses
this construction with adjectives, adverbs
and nouns:
Más / menos + adjective/adverb/noun + que
Mario es menos estudioso que Carlos
Tu casa está más lejos que mi casa.
Yo tengo menos clases que mi amiga.
• Use this construction to make comparison
of inequality with verbs:
Verb + más / menos + que
Margarita estudia más que Carolina.
• Before and adjective of quantity (numbers),
de replaces que as the equivalent of than.
Tengo más de veinte dólares.
Manolo no va a tomar más de dos cervezas.

• A superlative statement expresses the
highest or lowest degree of quality.
• Spanish uses the following construction:
Def. article + más or menos + adjective + de
• Note that the preposition de is the
equivalent of in or of after a superlative.
Marta es la más inteligente de la clase.
Paco es el más viejo de los tíos.
