Pronombres de objeto directo
Direct objects
You already know your subjects pronouns –
yo, tú, él/ella/Ud, nosotros, vosotros,
ellos/ellas/Uds.
 In this presentation we are going to look at
another set of pronouns. To begin with, think
of one way of completing each sentence:





I saw _______.
I ate ________.
I drank ______.
I met ________.

Direct objects
Did you come up with something similar to
these?
 I saw Mary.
 I ate the broccoli.
 I drank a glass of Kool-Aid.
 I met your parents.


Whatever you put into the blanks is a
direct object.
DOP’s answer the question “Who?” or
“What?” For example…
 I carried. (What?)



I carried an umbrella. (DOP)
I helped. (What?)

I helped the old lady cross the street. (DOP)
Direct object pronouns
DOP’s substitute a pronoun for each
noun.
 I saw Mary (noun). >> I saw her (DOP).
 I ate the broccoli (noun). >> I ate it
(DOP).
 I drank a glass of Kool-Aid (noun). >> I
drank it (DOP).
 I met your parents (noun). >> I met
them (DOP).

What are the forms?
me > me
 you > te
 him > lo
 her > la
 it > lo, la
 us > nos
 you all (familiar) > os
 them > los, las

me, te, nos
 Since you’ve already seen reflexive
verbs, you are familiar with me, te, and
nos. The direct object and reflexive
forms for these three pronouns are
identical. The other pronouns-- lo, la,
los, las – look a lot like the articles
(except el > lo).

Here are some examples.
¿Tú me ves?
 María me mira.
 El profesor me llamó.
 In each case, a different subject does
something and I am the direct recipient of
that action.

Now look at these sentences and fill
in the blank:
¿Dónde compraste el diccionario?
 Lo compré en Amazon.com.
 ¿Dónde está mi pluma?
 La dejaste [you left it] en la mesa.
 ¿Dónde están los caramelos?
 Los comí.

La, lo las, los!

In each sentence, we’ve replaced a noun
(diccionario, pluma, caramelos) with a
pronoun (lo, la, los):




el diccionario >> lo
la pluma >> la
Los caramelos >> los
Note that we place the object pronoun in
front of the verb, unlike in English.

Los comí.

Fill in the blank with the correct DOP.
¿Dónde está mi cuaderno?
 ____ dejaste [you left it] encima del
escritiorio. Ah, sí, ____ veo. Gracias.

¡Qué bien!
¿Dónde está mi cuaderno?
 Lo dejaste encima del escritiorio. Ah, sí,
lo veo. Gracias.
 “el” cuaderno > lo

¿Qué tal lo hiciste?
¿Cuándo hiciste la cama?
 La hice a las 8:00.
 ¿Sacaste la basura?
 Claro, ya la saqué.
 ¿Dónde están los platos?
 Los puse en el lavaplatos.
 ¿Y el césped?
 Ya lo corté.

Y la respuesta es…





Oye, Luis, ¿qué es esta nota en mi mesa?
Yo te llamé ayer, pero tú no estabas.
¿Cuándo me llamaste? Yo estaba en mi
despacho casi todo el día.
Te llamé a las 3:00.
Ah, tuve una reunión corta. Por eso no estaba
en mi despacho cuando me llamaste.
