with biodegradable ester insulation
Siemens, one of the most innovative suppliers of distribution transformers, has successfully tested and delivered
the first units of distribution transformers for Netze BW
insulated with Midel eN natural ester. This insulation fluid
is organic, non-toxic, biodegradable, and has a higher
flash point than mineral oil. The ecological transformers
will be installed in the overall service area of Netze BW,
with special attention to environmental protection.
Netze BW is one of the EnBW subsidiaries, operating
around 26,500 distribution transformers, of which 1,000
units must be replaced annually or reinstalled.. As the first
step they ordered 102 natural-ester-insulated distribution
transformers. The delivery was scheduled to start at the
beginning of February and to be completed by the beginning of April 2016.
Once installed, the transformers will be closely monitored
by Netze BW and the results will be evaluated in cooperation with the University of Stuttgart over a specific period
of time to further prove the benefits of this alternative
insulation.
Transnet BW, another 100 percent EnBW subsidiary, is one
of the major transmission grid operators, and was the first
operator to install large power transformers with natural
ester insulation. The positive experience with the large
Siemens transformers was one pivotal factor for the large
order of distribution transformers. Furthermore, the customer chose Siemens transformers because they fully
meet the expectations regarding safety and reliability.

To date, this order represents the largest order ever for environmentally friendly insulated distribution transformers
in Germany.
