What is Buddhism
Buddhism did not replace
Shinto but was and is still
practiced along side it.
Based on the teachings of
Siddhartha Gautama
Siddhartha was known as
the Buddha or
“Enlightened One”
Began in India in B.C. 500
Arrived in Japan in A.D.
500 from Korea
Basic Principles of Buddhism
Suffering is a part of life
Two reasons people suffer
is that they are too attached
to material possessions and
selfish ideas
By living in wise, moral, and
thoughtful way, people can
eventually learn to escape
suffering
There are lots of different
Buddhist sects or groups
Pure Land Buddhism
Pure Land Buddhism:
Does not require any special
rituals (popular with common
people)
Followers chant the Buddha’s
name over and over to achieve
an enlightened state
Zen Buddhism
Emphasizes self-discipline,
simplicity and meditation (quiet
thinking)
rituals
Zen means meditation
Quiet reflection and inner
peace are important parts of
Zen Buddhism
Samurai believed Zen
Buddhism would bring them
inner peace and help them in
battle
