COPY INTO GLOSSARY PHOTOSYNTHESIS This is a process by which plants use light energy, water and CO2 to produce sugars., their food RESPIRATION All animals and plants do this, it needs O2 and produces energy CO2 A gas with carbon in it. FOSSIL FUELS Oil and coal are these, they release carbon dioxide when burnt March 6 , 2013 Focus: Nature’s Cycles Objective: 6.L.1.2 review the water cycle and analyze the role of plants and animals in the carbon cycle HW: reading and questions, comic strip due Friday Warm-Up: Preview (complete sheet front and back) Page COMPLETE WORK FROM YESTERDAY AND TURN IN COPY INTO GLOSSARY Lithosphere – includes Earth’s crust or surface, and the upper mantle Atmosphere – made of the gases that surround Earth, weather occurs in the atmosphere Hydrosphere – includes all the water found on Earth Biosphere – includes all the living things on Earth and the environments in which they live I am checking: • • • • • Pg. 149 151 How am I Doing? Oxygen – O2 O2 CO2 oxygen Carbon dioxide Plants make Animals make Animals need Plants need The Carbon Cycle All life is based on the element carbon. Carbon is in….. •all living things •the atmosphere •layers under ocean floor •fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) Every living thing contains carbon. Carbon is always being cycled through the environment (from plants and animals to the air and ground) This is how all living things have How does carbon move FROM carbon in them! the air INTO plants and animals? Carbon dioxide (CO2) moves into plants by photosynthesis Carbon moves into animals by eating plants or other animals Carbon moves from the air into plants by photosynthesis! Plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) through their leaves. They use CO2 to make their food. Then, plants give out oxygen (O2) in a process called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis: When plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and change it into oxygen (O2) (CO2) => (O2) Draw How does carbon dioxide move INTO the air FROM animals? All living things breathe. This is called respiration. During respiration, animals take in oxygen (O2) and give out carbon dioxide (CO2). Draw Fill in with key words • • • • • • Carbon dioxide Plants Photosynthesis Oxygen Breath Cycle Plants and animals trade carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2) back and forth Animals (including humans) breathe Plants take in the out carbon dioxide carbon dioxide (CO2)through through (CO2) Animals need respiration. photosynthesis oxygen breathe. and givetoout They breathe oxygen (O2) the O2 from the plants and release CO2. GLOBAL WARMING: A result of TOO MUCH carbon in the air! Too much carbon in the atmosphere is bad for the Earth. It traps in heat and causes global warming. Burning fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide How does TOO MUCH carbon Humans move into the air? are Volcano eruptions adding Burning Fossil Fuels (pollution) too much Deforestation (cutting down trees) CO2 to the air! How does TOO MUCH carbon move into the air? “Burning coal, oil, and other fossil fuels releases heat-trapping gas, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), into the atmosphere.” Burning fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide Human activities We burn lots of fossil fuels -Transportation (cars, busses, etc.) -Heating -Cooking -Electricity -Factories All of this releases lots of carbon dioxide CO2 into the air. We are adding carbon to the air faster than it can be removed through photosynthesis. Because of this, there is more carbon dioxide today than there has ever been! Human Activities Deforestation (Cutting down lots of trees) Allows too much carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air. Less trees means less photosynthesis, so more CO2. What can we do?? Human Activity that can REDUCE (decrease) the amount of Carbon • USE LESS ELECTRICITY – Electricity is one of the biggest producers of carbon. Every time you make toast or turn on the TV, you are adding to global warming. – Turn it off when not in use (lights, TV, DVD player, computer, etc....) • Recycle paper and plant more trees Label The Water and Carbon Cycles Include: Respiration, Transpiration, Condensation, Evaporation, Precipitation, Photosynthesis Sun Condensation Precipitation Photosynthesis Transpiration Label the sun and water Respiration Evaporation Water Respiration http://www.kidsnewsroom.org/cli matechange/movies/carbon_cyc le_version2.swf http://eo.ucar.edu/kids/green/cyc les6.htm Carbon Cycle Instructions: Label carbon pools and draw arrows between pools that you visited.
