The way rocks are
broken down into
smaller bits and soil
is called
weathering
Social Studies 3G
Ch 2
Name 3 things that cause
weathering (wearing away) of
the rock of the earth’s crust.
1) Wind
2) Water
3) Plants

Ch 2
How does wind cause
weathering?
Wind picks up sand
and blows it against
rocks, causing them
to wear away.

Ch 2
How does water cause
weathering?
• Water moving over rocks,
wears them down or picks
them up and bounces them
around, causing them to break.
• Water also freezes, expands
and cracks the rock into
smaller pieces.

How do plants cause
weathering?
When plant roots
grow into cracks in
rocks, they split the
rock.

Which rock looks weathered
the most?
•The smoothest

The movement of
soil or bits of rock
by wind and water
is called
erosion

The slow erosion to
land is caused by….
1)
2)
3)
4)
Wind
Water
Glaciers
Gravity

Ch 2
How do water, ice,
wind and gravity cause
erosion.
1) Water washes away soil
2) Ice (glaciers) scrape up rocks and
soil as they move downhill
3) Wind picks up small particles and
moves them to a new spot
4) Gravity causes things to move
downhill

How is a delta
formed?
Water moving downstream wears
away rock into sediment, and
deposits it at the end of the river.
The sediment piles up into new
land, called a delta.
Delta’s are often the shape of a
triangle.

What are glaciers?
Huge sheets of ice that
form in places that are
frozen all year round.
Continental glaciers are
much bigger than valley
glaciers.

Ch 2
How do glaciers change the
land?
• Gravity causes glaciers to move downhill
about 1 foot a day, and cut into the land
along the way.
• They scrape up rocks and soil, and pile them
up into hills.
• They scoop out large holes that sometimes
fill with water which become lakes.
• They scoop out deep valleys

What is creep?
Gravity causing the
erosion of soil, by moving
it slowly downhill.
Creep causes roads to
crack and fences to
become crooked.
