The Facts
What kinds of STI are there?
• Virus:
– HIV, Genital Warts
and Genital Herpes
• Bacteria:
– Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea
and Syphilis
• Parasite:
– Pubic Lice
If the condom appears on screen then condoms offer good protection against the STI shown
What am I?
• A virus that stays in the
body so symptoms can
come back
• Symptoms are: blisters or sores on the
genitals, perhaps with a tingling feeling
• Can be treated with special creams but
usually someone has to have a lot of rest for
it to get better
Genital Herpes
What am I?
• Most people don’t have
any symptoms at all
• Symptoms might include pain when peeing,
abdominal pain, clear or white fluid coming
from the penis or vagina
• Could cause infertility (can’t have children)
• A bacteria that can be treated with antibiotics
Chlamydia
What am I?
• Caused by a virus called
the Human Papilloma
Virus (HPV)
• This causes growths in or around the vagina
or penis
• Can be treated at a clinic – treatments are
more effective at the early stages of this STI
Genital Warts
What am I?
• A parasite that lives in the pubic hair, and
sometimes in the chest hair or armpit hair
• May cause itching around the genitals and
other hairy bits of the body
• Can be treated with special shampoos,
creams and lotions
Pubic Lice
What am I?
• Symptoms may include
pain when peeing,
yellow or green fluid
coming from the penis/vagina
• Can cause infertility (means you can’t have
children)
• A bacteria that can be treated with antibiotics
Gonorrhoea
What am I?
• A virus that may not show any symptoms for
many years, but breaks down the immune
system
• A virus that lives in semen, vaginal fluids,
blood and breast milk
• A person living with the virus can take
medication that can help them live a healthy
life
HIV
• Anyone can get HIV,
young or old, woman
or man, gay or straight
• Testing is the only way
to tell if someone has HIV – as they may not
have any symptoms
• HIV is passed on most frequently between
men and women
What am I?
• This happens in 3 stages:
– Stage 1: a few weeks after
catching it, painless spots on penis,
vagina, anus or mouth
– Stage 2: a few weeks after stage 1, may get
a rash anywhere on the body and feel
unwell
– Stage 3: can happen 3-30 years later.
Starts attacking the brain, heart, nervous
system…
• A bacteria that can be treated with antibiotics
Syphilis
