TOOTH PARTS
Part of
Tooth
Function
Enamel
Outer layer of the tooth.
Enamel is the hardest
material in the body.
Enamel protects the inside
of the tooth.
Dentin
Inner part of tooth, yellow in
color.
Similar to bone, not as strong
as Enamel.
Pulp
Most inner part of tooth,
contains nerves and blood
vessels.
Gums
Pink area around tooth.
DENTAL PROBLEMS
CAVITIES
S Bacteria, acid, food, and saliva combine in the mouth to form a
sticky substance called plaque that sticks to the teeth.
S The acids in plaque dissolve the enamel surface of the tooth and
create holes in the tooth called CAVITIES.
ROOT CANAL
Tooth decay invades the tooth, penetrating
through the enamel and then the dentin in to
the pulp.
Gingivitis
Plaque at the base of the tooth causing
irritation, redness, and swelling of your gums.
S Irritation, redness and swelling of your gums.
PERIDONTITIS
S Occurs when gingivitis is untreated.
S Infection and inflammation spreads
from the gums to the ligaments and
bone that supports the teeth.
S Loss of support causes the teeth to
become loose and eventually fall out.
