What is a Germ?
• Germs are tiny creatures, so tiny you can’t
see them without a microscope
• Germs are found everywhere, and if
germs creep into our bodies they can
make us feel unwell
• Scientists call germs ‘microbes’.

• Here are a few germs
under the microscope:

Bacteria
• If you have ever had a sore
throat or ear infection it was
probably caused by bacteria!
• Bacteria can help us too, we have friendly
bacteria that live in our bodies that help us
digest food.

• Viruses cause chicken pox,
the flu, measles and colds
• Viruses like to live inside
living plants, animals and
people, but they can survive for a while on
surfaces like the kitchen counter, a door
handle, or objects in your classroom!
