Studying 101: How to Study and Pass There are many ways to help yourself learn the material you need to know to pass any class…including science classes! In this Lesson you will learn some techniques and skills that will help you to pass my class. Some of the techniques will work for you and some may not. Each of you is unique. Different techniques work better with different personalities. You must determine which techniques work best for you. However, to do this you must TRY each technique and see if it works. The Cornell Method The most important thing about studying notes using the Cornell Method is what you place in the margins. After you have taken line notes in class and are ready to study them, go through your notes and separate them with lines into ideas. For example, put a line between the definition of a word, it’s examples, and other comments and the definition of another word and it’s cue examples and comments. The next step is to place a “cue” word in the margin at the left hand side. The cue word is a single word to cue you to recall the information in the notes. For example, if you were studying the definitions mentioned above, you would write the word being defined. say The last step is to cover the notes and, looking only at the cue words, try to say what is in the notes. If you can say it, you The ReWrite Method Biology = =study Biology study of life of life Characteristics of life Characteristics of life Made Made of cells of cells unicellular = one unicellular = one celled celled multicellular = many multicellular = many celled celled specialized = many specialized = many celled celled with cells withhaving cells special havingjobs special jobs Reproduce Reproduce asexual = one asexual = one gene gene donor donor sexual = = sexual two two gene gene donors donors Universal Universal genetic genetic code code all animals all animalshave have same same stuffstuff makingmaking up genes up genes Grow Grow and Develop and Develop Get Food Get Food and Use and Energy Use Energy metabolismmetabolism = rate at which = organism rate at uses which energy organism uses The Code Method 1.2.Transform yourcodes noteson into codes. Next, write find all a study buddy and turns with asking your questions to each other. The Rhyme/Association Method Rhymes don’t need to “rhyme,” they just need to help you remember. Some definitions lend themselves to making rhymes and sayings to help you remember them.concentration. (rhyme) Biomagnification, it increases DNA has C and G and T and A. RNA fills with uracils. (rhyme) The cell’s nucleus is like a command center. (association) Operant conditioning is trial and error operating. (association) The chick said “I’m imprinting” on my mother hen! (association) Insight Learning is using previous knowledge on anything in sight even if it’s a different problem. (rhyme) Operons turn a gene on. (rhyme) Humans are eukaryotes (you-(can)-carry-oats because you are human). (rhyme) Photosynthesis, CO2 gets into this. (rhyme) My toes do mitosis to fill in lost skin. (rhyme) My ovaries do mi-osis when they make eggs. (rhyme)
