Photosynthesis, yes but…


Carnivorous plants still make their own
food by the process of photosynthesis
But they supplement their “diet” with
insects and other small invertebrates
(no backbone) and on occasions even
vertebrates (small frogs, etc)
Why?


They usually live in habitats that are
very poor in nutrients (especially
nitrogen)
Nitrogen is essential in the making of
amino acids that make up the proteins
and nucleic acids that make up DNA
(genetics)
