Chapter 9 SCHOOL AND DELIQUENCY Being successful in a school environment Delinquency The nature and quality of the school experience is related to underlying problems of delinquency. In 1980 7% of children attended school. In 2010 90% of children attended school Many believe that schools are the primary instrument in socialization. Reading scores for 4th graders has not improved in 10 years. The average for 8th graders has risen slightly. Females are outperforming males. European and Asian Americans are outperforming American Indians, Hispanics, and African Americans. Income also influenced lower achievement in both grades. Truant Truancy described as being absent from school without an excuse. main reason for dropping out 10% will not finish school. Truancy may lead to the following. Drugs Antisocial behavior Criminal behavior Unemployment Don’t like school Need/want to work Difficulty getting along with teachers. Being to old for the grade level Low achievement Poor problem solving abilities Low self-esteem Substance abuse ½ of female dropouts were pregnant or just had a child A dropout over a lifetime could cost the public $243.000.00 to $380,000.00. If that person becomes a criminal the cost could be between 1.3 and 1.5 million. Chronic underachievers are most likely to be delinquents. Underachieving has more of an effect then Economic class Peer group Race or ethnic background Underachievers are described as those who fail to meet expected levels of school achievement. School failure is a direct cause of delinquent behavior. School failure leads to emotional and psychological problems that cause antisocial behavior. School failure and delinquency share some of the same problems such as drug abuse, it affects both. It could lead to delinquency and school failure. Tracking is the process of dividing students into groups according to their ability and achievement levels. Problems with tracking Less achievement Leads to failure Less participation in extra curricular activity Leads to higher dropout rate Leads to delinquency Frequently used by teenagers Marijuana Hashish Cocaine Crack Heroin Alcohol Anesthetics Inhalants Stimulants Sedatives Barbiturates Steroids Tranquilizers Hallucinogens Cigarettes Monitoring the Future by the University of Michigan 45,000 students participated in survey Drug use was down 37% for 8th graders Drug use was down 14% for 12th graders This survey was taken in 2006 Choice Behavior problems Emotional problems Genetic factors Family factor Peer pressure Social disorganization Poverty Neglect Parents use What are your thoughts on the legalization of drugs?
