Being successful in a
school environment
Delinquency
The nature and quality of the school experience is
related to underlying problems of delinquency.

In 1980 7% of children
attended school.

In 2010 90% of children
attended school
Many believe that schools are the
primary instrument in socialization.





Reading scores for 4th graders has not
improved in 10 years.
The average for 8th graders has risen slightly.
Females are outperforming males.
European and Asian Americans are
outperforming American Indians, Hispanics,
and African Americans.
Income also influenced lower achievement in
both grades.


A dropout over a lifetime could cost the public
$243.000.00 to $380,000.00.
If that person becomes a criminal the cost could
be between 1.3 and 1.5 million.


Chronic underachievers are most likely to be
delinquents.
Underachieving has more of an effect then
Economic class
 Peer group
 Race or ethnic background


Underachievers are described as those who fail
to meet expected levels of school achievement.



School failure is a direct cause of delinquent
behavior.
School failure leads to emotional and
psychological problems that cause antisocial
behavior.
School failure and delinquency share some of
the same problems such as drug abuse, it
affects both. It could lead to delinquency and
school failure.


Tracking is the process of dividing students
into groups according to their ability and
achievement levels.
