Opening Statement – Mr. Satoshi Miura, NTT
I’d like to talk about NTT’s broadband networks and ICT services, and then indicate how
ICT can contribute to economic growth and social benefits.
Currently, NTT Group is working on these two strategies. At first, as for the infrastructure,
we have been pushing ahead with the construction of the NGN with quality of service. For
fixed line, we have expanded optic fiber-based broadband. For mobile, we will introduce
the Long Term Evolution, or LTE. In this way, IP-based network will be ready by the end of
the next fiscal year.
In addition, NTT Group focuses on creating ubiquitous broadband services on the NGN.
For example, we are working on IPTV and video services, e-learning, home ICT services,
health care support for consumer; and SaaS and digital signage for business.
Now, I’d like to talk about the social importance of ICT services. First, there is the
contribution to economic growth. In Japan, the ICT industry accounts for around one-third
of real GDP growth. And it has also a positive impact on other industries. Under difficult
economic conditions, creating new ICT services will be critical to the recovery and growth of
the global economy.
The second aspect is the role of ICT as a transformational driver for creating innovation and
resolving social issues. The contribution of ICT is more than the efficiency. It has
become increasingly essential to management strategies and social development. As
society ages and the birth rate falls, Japan has seen the emergence of social issues.
Those are medical care problems, labor shortages, environmental and energy issues.
The same problems are also faced by countries around the world.
The following are specific applications through ICT services. (1) Telework provides with
work opportunities; (2) Telemedicine can help to resolve regional disparities in medical
care; (3) The decrease in travel through teleconference reduces the amount of CO2
emission; (4) Home ICT service improves convenience of everyday life.
As new services develop, safe and reliable infrastructure becomes more and more critical,
in terms of user privacy and security. Therefore, we look forward to collaborating with
various players, and working on developing new technologies and services.
