Building a Simple Circuit
A Demonstration of voltage and
current.
Are electronics so complicated?
 Electronic devices are more easily
understood by knowing certain
fundamentals.
•
•
•
•
Voltage
Current
Ohm’s Law
Capacitors, resistors, and diodes.
Voltage
 What is voltage ( V ) ?
• Voltage is amount of water you have.
• Batteries have voltage.
• Bigger the battery, bigger the voltage
Current
 What is current ( I ) ?
• Current is the amount of water flowing in the
circuit.
• When a circuit goes bad or gets hot it is
because there is too much current.
Ohm’s Law
 Why do I always hear about Ohm’s Law ?
• Voltage, current, and resistance are all
proportional to each other.
• V=I x R.
• Voltage = current x resistance.
Capacitors

What are capacitors ?
• Capacitors are devices
that store charge.
• Bump in the circuit.
– The water has to build
up to go over the bump.
Resistors

What are resistors ?
• Resistors slow the
current down.
• Current =
Voltage/resistance.
• Pegs in the board.
– The more pegs you put
in the board the harder
it is for the water to go
through.
Diodes

What are Diodes ?
• Diodes only let current
pass in one direction.
• Glass door in the
board.
– Water can only go
forward and not
backward.
Play with it !!!
Build your own Circuit !!!
Circuits in your house

Circuits are
everywhere.
• Take some time to play with
some electronic devices in
your house. But, always be
very careful to disconnect it
from all electricity. Even small
amounts of current can kill. Be
very careful when playing with
tv’s or computer monitors
because they can often carry a
charge for many hours.
Who works with circuits ?
 Many jobs use electronics.
•
•
•
•
Electrical Engineers.
Electricians
Technicians
Many others
Electronics is fun
I am an electrical
engineer and use
electric circuits to
solve real problems.
 I love engineering !!!!!!
