Presentation by Keith Rickard
6 March 2008
What is a an Exoplanet?
• Short for Extrasolar-Planet
• Is a planet beyond the Solar System orbiting another star
• 51 Pegasi was the first example discovered on 6 Oct 1995
• 276 exoplanets have so far been discovered
• So far, only indirect methods have been used
Indirect methods of detection
• Most productive is the radial velocity or Doppler method
Indirect methods of detection
• Transit method
