THE RENAISSANCE • The Renaissance was a transition from the Middle Ages into Modern times • it means rebirth or reawakening • it began in Northern Italy • During this time period it was an honor to be called a Renaissance Man; it meant you were well rounded - secular THE DE MEDICIS • The family members were patrons (supporters) of the arts • the most famous family member was Lorenzo The Magnificent Renaissance Artists The Masters Leonardo daVinci • He is considered a Renaissance man • he was a painter, sculptor, teacher, soldier, inventor and politician • his famous works include “The Mona Lisa”; “The Last Supper” MICHELANGELO • He was also considered a Renaissance man • he painted frescos - to paint on wet plaster • his famous works include “The Sistine Chapel”; “David”; “The Pieta” RAFAEL • He created the “School of Athens” BOTTACELLI • He created the “Birth of Venus” The Northern Renaissance • Renaissance ideas migrate North to Holland, Belgium, Germany • There was little influence from Classical ideals-portrayed common , everyday themes • Did not stress architecture and sculpture • Painting was the art form of choice • Used oil paint and a technique called glazing Van Eyck • One of the first to popularize oil paint • Came from a family of famous painters • Not a lot of perspective in the background • “Consecration of Thomas A Becket”; ”Virgin and Child”; “Madonna” RENAISSANCE LITERATURE • Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince; a handbook of rules for a ruler • it was dedicated to Lorenzo de Medici Petrarch • He is considered to be the first modern scholar Cervantes • One of his most famous works was Don Quixote • it was a satire on Medieval chivalry Shakespeare • He was one of the first to create complex characters Erasmus • He wrote “Praise of Folly” • it was the first criticism of the church Literacy • Up to this point in history all books were copied by hand • in 1455 Johann Gutenburg invented the printing press • it increased literacy
