BACKGROUND TO ENVIRONMENT
STATISTICS IN JAMAICA

Environment Statistics Unit at the Statistical
Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) formed in 2000.

Mandate of the unit is the production of
environment statistics through routine collection
and compilation of data.

The unit had a workshop in 2001 with all the
relevant stakeholders/data providers to compile a
list of data sources and availability of statistics
related to the environment.

There has been no Inter-Agency Committee meeting
convened by STATIN since CARICOM Workshop on
Environment Statistics in 2011.
However, Joint Meeting with STATIN and CARICOM in
November 2012 with ministries/agencies engaged in
production and use of Environment Statistics related to the
area of Biodiversity.
Ongoing relationship with ministries/agencies/other
stakeholders that provide data related to environment
statistics.
Data is usually received in a timely manner once it is
requested by STATIN and is available from the relevant
ministries/agencies. Environment statistics database is
updated routinely.
Status of Work Plan for Compilation of
Environment Statistics

As mentioned previously the Environment Unit at
STATIN was established fourteen years ago and
producing reports on environment statistics since
2001.

The Unit currently made up of two persons - Unit
Head and a Statistician.

Need for additional staff, but due to budget
constraints not a possibility at this time.
UN Framework for Development of
Environment Statistics (FDES 2013)



Jamaica was represented in the group revising the
Framework for the Development of Environment
Statistics. Revision now complete.
Jamaica now a member of the Expert Group on
Environment Statistics – developing the
methodological manual for the FDES Core Set of
Environment Statistics.
With the completion of the revised FDES there will be
a need for a Regional Workshop on the
implementation of the FDES which would assist
countries in the region in the collection and
compilation of environment statistics at the national
level.
