Salina Cruz, city and port is part of Oaxaca, located north of Tehuantepec’s Gulf, in the Pacific
Ocean. It has tropical weather with 30ºC average temperature; rainy season is from June
through October, wind blows from north through southeast; it has a 2,191.50 hectare of urban
area, which represents 0.1407% of Oaxaca City’s total territory, with 76,596 inhabitants; this
makes it the third most populated city in the entire state.
It was founded in 1522 by the Spaniards who had Pedro de Alvarado in command. That same
year on May 3rd, he named it “Salina de la Santa Cruz”.
Throughout history, this city used to be a fisher’s town but now it is considered a deep-sea port
and with coastal navigation. Nowadays, you can observe its industrial dimensions according to
the port infrastructure, the harbor zone, its oil refining plant and its distribution terminal called
PEMEX.
The 14th Naval Zone Headquarters is located in this city as well as the 20th Navy Shipyard
which is the greatest and most important in the country, contributing in a relevant way to the
country’s and the region’s naval development.
Salina Cruz is part of the Isthmus Region, one of the eight regions in which Oaxaca is divided,
and it also has 20,755 km2 and 595,433 inhabitants; additionally, it has the greatest extension

in territory and it is the home of the “zapotec”, and it is also the place where the Tehuana
emerged. It covers the districts of Juchitan and Tehuantepec. It counts with “Antonio Dovali
Jaime” refinery which is the biggest among the refinery system in Mexico; as from late past
Century, the region started a modernization process by implementing wind power plants,
taking advantage of the constant winds that blow from north through the so-called zone “La
Ventosa.”
