its San Ramon, California, office.
What factored into your decision to
deploy an IP solution?
Several factors influenced our decision to go with
an IP solution. Our main headquarters is in
Broomfield, Colorado, and we were opening a new
remote location in San Ramon, California, for a
small group of employees. We needed phones and
service for approximately seven people with T1
Internet data connectivity. We expected the equipment to provide all of the functionality that comes
with a key system/small PBX including speakerphone, conferencing, transfer, voice mail, “do not
disturb” and speed dial. For this new facility, we
were very conscious of costs and needed an economical solution for data and telephone circuits as
well as telephone equipment, we didn’t want to
invest in a lot of equipment for the phone service
or incur a large monthly cost.
We set out to find a high performance, economical
key system/small PBX, and then order data and
phone circuits as separate pieces, but the coordination of installation was complex and the pricing
extremely high for that option. So when we found
out about the Polycom/GoBeam combination, and
its ability to provide a complete turnkey solution
for our telephony needs bundled with our T1 data
needs at a highly competitive price, we were sold.
We were particularly attracted to the dynamic
mode capability of the system, which allows us to
use the entire T1 line for data when the phones
are not in use. This is especially important to us
for backups at night when we utilize the full
capacity of the T1 line.

What features do you like the most
about the phone? How about the
service?
We like the integrated web features. Looking up
recent incoming calls and clicking on them to dial
is a feature we use often. The “follow me” capability, which allows the phones to be forwarded,
also is a great benefit, especially for our sales
force. The voice mail system is very good as
well. We value the ability to retrieve voice mail
from a computer or laptop without dialing in to
the system.
Overall, Polycom and GoBeam have done an
excellent job in integrating typical phone system
features into a web-based solution. You don’t
lose any of the features you’re used to from a
traditional PBX/key system, but you add many
new features thanks to the web interface. In
addition to the functionality mentioned above,
the handset and full-duplex hands-free quality is
outstanding. The service and reliability also have
been excellent.

Polycom SoundPoint IP phones and GoBeam
provided MSI with a turnkey solution at a fraction of
the cost of alternative offerings. With the GoBeam
IP telephony solution, there was no need to purchase separate telephony and data resources.
GoBeam was able to run both over the same IP network. Plus, the Polycom SoundPoint IP 500 phones
gave users exceptional voice quality and all the features and functionality of a traditional PBX with the
unique benefit of IP telephony.

The IT Perspective
Polycom SoundPoint® IP 500 phones are deployed in the San Ramon, California, office with GoBeam
hosting the call management service. The entire telephony network runs over IP—sharing the same T1
line for MSI’s data connection needs. Priority is assigned to the voice packets over the data packets to
ensure optimum voice quality. But when the phones are not in use, MSI has full T1 access for activities
such as file backups at night.
