Key Highlights:
Multi-Service Cable Network
• End-to-end network
In today’s hotly contested communications environment, cable operators are in
a unique position to dominate the broadband market with a host of new services
based on an integrated platform of data,
voice, and video. Nortel Networks can
help you stay ahead of the curve with
Cable Media Solutions, our complete, endto-end solutions for high-speed data and
voice transmission over cable TV networks.
solutions that unite
video, voice, and data.
• Leadership position in
the cable and telephony
industry, providing best
of breed solutions from
Nortel Networks.
• Customer focused to
deliver open architecture
solutions that address the
broadband requirements
of data and voice.
Nortel Networks offers a full endto-end portfolio of products to build a
high-bandwidth network infrastructure
for video or data, while delivering the
required quality and features for voice.
Whether you are building new or
Voice port, cable modem
or packet port
incorporating an existing Hybrid Fiber
Coax (HFC) plant, Nortel Networks
has the solutions you need.
Access: Most cable operators have
taken the first step to upgrade existing
systems to high quality two-way HFC
networks. A key element in the cable
subscriber network is the residential
broadband cable access or modem
solution.
Nortel Networks offers an array of its
industry leading Cornerstone cable,
voice, and data solutions for RF and
IP cable infrastructures.
The Cornerstone voice system consists
of a Host Digital Terminal (HDT)
located at the cable headend, connected
to voice ports, located at homes or
businesses. The Cornerstone Voice
Port converts voice into digital signals
for transmission over the cable HFC
networks. This solution is deployed
today with more than 725,000 lines
commercially in more than 59 cities
worldwide as of July 2000.
Cornerstone Packet Port lets providers
deploy packet-based services as IP based
networks become more commercially
viable. The Packet Port is both the cable
modem and the network interface device
for primary line packetized voice and
data, and will support Data Over Cable
Service Interface (DOCSIS 1.1) cable
modem standards. Supporting
up to four toll-quality voice lines and
10 Mbps of data, this product provides
high bandwidth voice, video and data.
Cable modem traffic is aggregated into
the headend through the Cable Modem
Termination System 1500 (CMTS 1500).
Based on DOCSIS 1.1 the CMTS 1500
provides an interface between the
HFC plant and the digital-switched
or packet backbone network.
Network Edge: Beyond the Cornerstone
enabled residential access side of the
networks is the network edge, which
expands services to other customers such
as small, medium and large businesses.
Utilizing multi-service gateways, the
Nortel Networks Succession network
translates all industry standard protocols,
such as TDM, ATM and IP into a
seamless network architecture.
Our portfolio of gateways includes
product lines such as MG 4000,
MG 5000, UE9000, CVX1800 and
the IP-PSTN Gateway.
This gateway portfolio fills a range of
customer and network operator access
requirements, providing telephony
services interfaces to existing customer
equipment and points of network
interconnection, as well as advanced
data services all in a range of highly
scaleable configurations.
Aggregation Routers: For policy and
router devices, Nortel Networks offers
an array of premiere products such as
the Passport 8600 and the Shasta 5000
Broadband Service Node (BSN). The
Shasta 5000 BSN provides broadband
aggregation for over 32,000 subscribers
within a single platform, with sophisticated
provisioning and high-touch subscriber
services, while the Passport 8600 provides
the routing and switching capabilities,
differentiated services, and Quality of
Service (QoS).
Core Backbone: Today, 75% of all
the North American Internet traffic
currently flows over Nortel Networks
fiber-optic systems.
Optical Ethernet is a breakthrough new
way of building an integrated, business,
service provider, and optical network
based on one common language—
Ethernet technology. It combines the
reach and reliability of optical networking
with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness
of Ethernet to deliver higher bandwidth
with lower cost.
