CONCEPT AND DESIGN: WWW.BUERO-WILHELM.DE
Trier fascinates everyone interested in the Romans. Visitors
encounter Antiquity at every turn in the city, once one of the
largest Roman settlements. Nowhere else in Germany can the
Roman era be experienced so authentically: Porta Nigra, Amphitheater, Imperial and Barbara Baths, Constantine’s palace audience hall and the Roman Bridge are UNESCO World Heritage
sites.

NERO – EMPEROR, ARTIST AND
TYRANT – RECONSIDERED
Hardly any Roman emperor
has generated as much interest as Nero (reigned AD
54–68). For the first time in
Europe, a large exhibition to
be held at three different museums with numerous select
exhibits from Germany and
abroad will be devoted to his
life and the consequences of
his rule.
Today, the emperor is associated primarily with extravagance, megalomania and
cruelty. It is the last years of
Nero’s reign that have characterised today’s image
of the tyrant, persecutor of
Christians and arsonist. This
image spread as far back as
the writings of ancient authors
such as Tacitus and Suetonius,
members of the aristocracy
whose way of thinking was
anathema to Nero.
Current research results,
however, appear to paint the
emperor in a different light.
Indeed, Nero was extremely
popular among his subjects
for much of his reign. The exhibition shows his rise as successor to the throne, his reign,
his violent end and, also,
why Nero’s image has been
marked by negative aspects
to this day. Additionally, the
evaluation of his traditional
portrayal and the representation of the persecutions of the
Christians vividly documents
the reception history surrounding Nero’s person up
to the recent past.
